Woman Maoist killed in Orissa gun fight (Lead)

Bhubaneswar, April 24 (IANS) A woman Maoist was killed during a brief exchange of fire Sunday between police and the ultras in a forested area of Orissa’s Malkangiri district, an official said.

The gun battle took place near Tentulipadar village under Orkel police station area when a police party, comprising the personnel of the district voluntary force and the Special Operation Group — an elite anti-Maoist force — came face to face with a group of rebels.

“The force retaliated after the Maoists fired at them,” Deputy Inspector General of Police Soumendra Priyadarshi told IANS.

The Maoists escaped into the forest after the gun battle that lasted for a few minutes.

“All policemen are safe. A uniformed woman Maoist was killed,” he said.

“Police have seized three firearms, some live landmines, grenades and unused bullets from the site,” he said.

The Left-wing ultras are active in more then half of Orissa. The district of Malkangiri, more then 600 kms from state capital Bhubaneswar, is considered a rebel stronghold.
