Kolkata, Sep 16 (IANS) A poverty-stricken middle-aged woman Tuesday committed suicide by jumping into Ganges with her three children in West Bengal’s Howrah district. Her two kids were rescued, while the woman and her one-year-old child drowned, said the police. The incident took place near Howrah’s Badhaghat, the ferry service area.
“Sudama Chowdhury, 35, was in a motor launch on the Ganges with her two daughters and a son,” district police superintendent Neeraj K. Singh told reporters.
Near Badhaghat, she pushed her elder daughter Chanchal Kumari, 7 and son Sunil, 5 into the water and then herself jumped into the river with her younger daughter Bubli, Singh said.
“A local vendor rescued Chanchal and Sunil,” he added.
The search was on to fish out Chowdhury and Bubli’s bodies.
According to sources, Chowdhury, a resident of Shalkia town, was a victim of domestic violence and poverty that compelled her to commit suicide.
