Woman dies of burns, father alleges dowry death
January 28th, 2011 - 10:50 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Jan 28 (IANS) Parents of a 22-year-old woman who died after burn injuries in Nand Nagri area of east Delhi has alleged that their daughter was killed by her husband’s family after they failed to meet their dowry demands. A sub-divisional magistrate inquiry has been ordered into the incident.
According to police sources, Mala Pandey was admitted to the Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital with over 75 percent burn injuries Wednesday. She died Thursday evening.
Mala’s husband Jitender told the police that she caught fire while worshipping inside their residence located in Block C-2 of Nand Nagri.
However, Mala’s father Vishw Prasad Shastri has contested the claim and told police that his daughter was being harassed for dowry and she was probably burnt by her-in-laws, the sources said.
Jitender and Mala were married three years ago and have a six-month-old son.
Under the Indian law, any unnatural death of a woman within five years of her marriage becomes subject of police investigation so as to deter dowry deaths.
