Chennai, July 1 (IANS) The Chennai police commissioner ordered the suspension of woman police inspector allegedly caught “red-capped” after accepting a bribe from a complainant here Tuesday night. “The officer, S. Rajalakshmi, attempted to hide a bribe under her peaked cap and the very act of insulting the uniform proved her undoing,” Police Commissioner R. Sekar told IANS.

“The offence was also unpardonable due to the fact that the officer sought a bribe from a woman who requested action against a bigamist husband who was demanding dowry as well.

“Vigilance officials, who acting on a tip-off raided the police station, were nonplussed a bit when the evidence was untraceable, but the suspect had touched water before donning the cap again. The red dye gave her away through her cap - we can call it caught red-capped,” Sekar added.

Rajalakshmi, 56, joined the force in 1973 as a constable and had reached her present rank through promotions, police officials added.
