Wildlife conservationists honoured
December 1st, 2011 - 11:49 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Dec 1 (IANS) Scientists, researchers and photographers working in the field of wildlife conservation to defend the wildernesses and the food and water security of the Indian subcontinent were honoured here Thursday.
The 12th Sanctuary Wildlife Awards, 2011 were supported by corporates DSP BlackRock and Deutsche Bank and the awardees were nominated by readers of wildlife magazine, Sanctuary Asia.
The categories included a Lifetime Service Award, five Wildlife Service Awards, one Green Teacher Award, three Young Naturalists Awards and a ‘Wind Under the Wings’ Award for an organisation that has supported one or more of its employees to be of service to nature.
The Lifetime Service Award was conferred upon George Schaller, a US citizen whose research on the Indian tiger in the Kanha National Park has become the standard for field biology across the world, said the statement.
“Protecting natural India is the best way to sustain and strengthen our nation’s economic foundation, which cannot thrive as long as there is water, food and climate insecurity,” said Hemendra Kothari, chairman, DSP BlackRock.
According to Deutsche Bank CEO Gunit Chadha, continued support will be offered to the brave men and women who have dedicated to the proposition of protecting the wildlife.
