Wildfire burns 50,000 acres of land in US
April 9th, 2011 - 9:47 am ICT by IANSNew York, April 9 (IANS) A fast-moving wildfire in US’ Texas state has burnt down nearly 50,000 acres (200 square km) of land, officials said.
The fire that started in Stonewall county jumped the Brazo river Thursday and travelled almost 20 km in four hours. The fire could not be contained Friday, Xinhua reported.
More fire-fighters and equipment have been dispatched to the area, state authorities said, warning that more fires were expected throughout the weekend because of extremely dry conditions, high temperatures and high winds.
Fires are common across Texas due to the weather this part of the year.
The Texas Forest Service, the leading agency for fighting wildfires, said it has responded to 618 fires that burned down some 279,000 acres.
A study released recently says last month was the driest March in the history of Texas since 1895.
