Beijing, Nov 22 (IANS) A group of village teachers in China were assaulted by the police after being mistaken for swindlers in Guangdong province, their group leader said.

The six teachers, from the poverty-stricken Yulong county of Yunnan province, were on a visit to provincial capital Guangzhou for professional training organised by the ministry of education, the Shanghai Daily reported.

As soon as they arrived in Guangzhou Nov 14, they went shopping. Just as they were about to return to their hostel at night, they were confronted by plainclothes police.

The group leader, Zhang Kai said, four teachers were injured in the scuffle with the plainclothes officers. “My head was pinned to the ground and I was kicked by someone in the back,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Yunnan Provincial Education Bureau and Yulong county government has sought compensation for the teachers following the incident.
