Whatmore, Rhodes are contenders for Pakistan coach: Ashraf
November 29th, 2011 - 6:13 pm ICT by IANSLahore, Nov 29 (IANS) Despite interim-coach Mohsin Khan showing interest in taking over as chief coach, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Zaka Ashraf has named Australian Dav Whatmore and former South Africa player Jhonty Rhodes as frontrunners for the top job.
In an interview to Jang daily, Ashraf said Whatmore, who was in-charge of Sri Lanka during their famous World Cup win in 1996, and Rhodes are being seriously considered as the chief coach and the fielding coach.
The PCB had last month advertised for the positions of batting, bowling and fielding coaches and had received about 15 applications from interested candidates.
The PCB had also received 37 applications in response to the advertisements for the post of head coach after the resignation of Waqar Younis.
Mohsin had hinted that he is ready to take on as the chief coach.
“My aim has always been to serve Pakistan cricket in whatever capacity it requires. I am available to the Pakistan Cricket Board in whatever way they want me to work for them and in the best possible way,” he had said.
“I did the tough job of chairman of selectors when the board asked me to perform that role and now I was required to do the equally tough role of coach and I have performed that to the best of my ability,” Mohsin said.
