Kolkata, Oct 30 (IANS) The West Bengal government sounded an alert in the entire state and asked police to keep a close watch on the security scenario after Thursday’s serial bombings in neighbouring Assam.”We’ve alerted all our district police headquarters to beef up security in their respective districts. Police patrolling has been increased in all the police stations areas - mainly in the crowded places,” state Home Secretary Ashok Mohon Chakraborty told reporters here.

He said special security checking was undertaken at the border check posts, railway stations, bus terminus and various market complexes across the state.

Security was heightened especially in northern West Bengal districts as the region shares borders with Assam - where at least 61 people were killed and about 300 injured following 12 bomb blasts.

Security was also stepped up in this state capital.

“We are carrying out checking at all hotels, guesthouses, parking lots, public places etc. A large number of police personnel in civil dress have been pressed into action and our bomb defusal squad alerted,” Kolkata Police Commissioner Gautam Mohon Chakraborty said.

“We are also taking special care at all ghats (river embankments) in and around Kolkata, since today is the last date for immersion of goddess Kali idols in West Bengal,” said the official, adding the city police were constantly in touch with the check posts located in the bordering areas of the state.
