Weekend rains may give Punjab, Haryana some respite
May 20th, 2011 - 3:48 pm ICT by IANSChandigarh, May 20 (IANS) People in Punjab and Haryana may get a brief respite from scorching heat as the weathermen here have forecast a light to moderate rainfall over the weekend.
“We are expecting overcast conditions to prevail in most parts of Punjab and Haryana by this evening and it could be followed by drizzle during the night. Dust-storms and thunder-storms are also expected at isolated places in this region,” said a Met official here Friday.
Hisar town in Haryana was the hottest place in this region Friday at 45.5 degrees Celsius, five notches above normal. However, Karnal and Ambala towns settled at 40 and 39.4 degrees Celsius respectively.
Chandigarh city, joint capital of Punjab and Haryana, recorded the maximum temperature of 39.8 degrees that was two degrees above what is normal for this time of the season.
Amritsar was sizzling at 44.6 degrees Celsius — a good six degrees above normal. Besides, Patiala and Ludhiana recorded 41.6 and 42.6 degrees Celsius respectively.
