We need to invest in our youth: Yechury

New Delhi, Oct 29 (IANS) Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Sitaram Yechury Saturday said the country needed to invest more in its youth who can build a better and progressive India.

“We need to invest in our youth, their education and employment,” Yechury said at an event held here to mark the 91st Foundation Day of Jamia Millia Islamia.

“This youth will build a better, new and progressive India,” he said at a special lecture on “Youth for Democracy and Secularism”.

An interactive session followed the lecture which saw students discuss with the parliamentarian various issues like religion, politics and Maoism.

The celebrations began in the morning with Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology Sachin Pilot and Vice Chancellor of Jamia, Najeeb Jung, receiving the Guard of Honour by the varsity’s National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadets.

“Jamia continues to bear its social responsibility by serving the most deprived sections and often first generation learners who come to Jamia from all parts of the country,” Jung said.

The celebrations culminated with a cricket match between Jamia Staff XI and sports journalists in the university sports complex.

Jamia became a central university by an act of parliament in 1988.
