War movies idol Van Johnson dies at 92

Los Angeles, Dec 13 (DPA) Actor Van Johnson, who was one of Hollywood’s top stars during World War II, has died aged 92 in a New York nursing home, the Los Angeles Times reported Friday.Johnson played a succession of all-American military heroes in movies such as “A Guy Named Joe” and “Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo” when many more-established stars were serving in the armed forces. He was exempted from military duties because of a car accident in 1943 that left him with a metal plate in his head.

The Rhode Island-born actor also starred in movies such as “Go For Broke”, “The Caine Mutiny”, “Two Girls and a Sailor”, and “Weekend at the Waldorf”.
