Vote bank politics shields illegal Bangladeshis: Court (Lead)
January 25th, 2012 - 12:04 am ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Jan 24 (IANS) Petty vote bank politics prevents firm, resolute and intense government action against nearly three crore Bangladeshis illegally staying in India, a Delhi court said while sentencing a dacoity case suspect from the neighbouring country to a four-years jail term.
Additional Sessions Judge Kamini Lau, in a order made available Tuesday, awarded the four-year jail term to Fazlu who tried to commit a dacoity, along with other, in north Delhi in 2004. He was also involved in other offences.
“It is unfortunate that while genuine citizens of this country continue to suffer in abject poverty, it is petty vote bank politics which prevents a firm, resolute, intense government action against the three crore (official figures) Bangladeshi nationals illegally staying in our country, enjoying all the benefits which otherwise are the entitlement of citizens thereby compelling the courts to step in.”
Lau observed that convict Fazlu had tried to mislead the court by placing before it a fake and fabricated document (ration card) only to evade proceedings under the Foreigners Act and to legalise his stay in India.
The court directed that immediately after the completion of the period of his sentence the competent authority should deport him to Bangladesh in accordance with law.
Fazlu was tried for committing a dacoity along with other five others, including four Bangladeshis. Out of the other four Bangladeshi accused, one is dead and three others have been declared proclaimed offenders.
ding to prosecution case, Fazlu with other five accused were trying to commit dacoity on Jan 9, 2004. The accused were arrested from a park near the Outer Ring Road opposite Delhi Jal Board office in Prashant Vihar area of Rohini Jan 9, 2004.
The police had recovered various weapon from their possession.
