Hyderabad, Oct 31 (IANS) In an attempt to create public awareness against vehicular pollution, municipal employees in Andhra Pradesh’s coastal city of Visakhapatnam Monday pedalled their way to the office.

Leading by example, Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) commissioner B. Ramanjaneyulu himself reached the office on a bicycle Monday.

He along with some of his colleagues even undertook field visits in different parts of the city on bicycles.

The municipal commissioner has made it compulsory for all municipal employees at the head office and all 72 ward offices not to use their vehicles once a week.

The staff has been asked to come to the office every Monday on bicycles or on foot. As per the new orders issued by him, those coming on motorcycles and in cars will not be allowed into the office.

“We want to promote cycling so that air pollution can be controlled. This will also promote healthy living,” the officer told the reporters. He said the city has 700,000 vehicles, adding to the problem of pollution.

Ramanjaneyulu said since Monday is observed as grievance day, the use of bicycles by the staff would greatly contribute to creating public awareness.

In another move to check vehicular pollution, the municipal commissioner banned use of vehicles on the beach road between 6 a.m and 9 a.m.

The GVMC will also make available 100 bicycles for those who want to cycle on the beach road during the three hours when the stretch will be a no-vehicle zone.
