Shimla, Jan 20 (IANS) In a setback for union minister and former chief minister Virbhadra Singh, the election of his son as president of the Himachal Pradesh Indian Youth Congress (IYC) has been declared null and void, an official statement said here Friday.

“Going into the complaints, a detailed inquiry was held and it was concluded that Vikramaditya Singh (Virbhadra’s son) stands in violation of the code of conduct laid down for IYC elections,” a Nodia-based Foundation for Advanced Management of Elections (FAME) statement said.

FAME was authorised by the IYC and the National Students Union of India (NSUI), another Congress outfit, for conducting elections of both the outfits in the country.

Political greenhorn Vikramaditya, 22, who won the elections with a huge margin in November last year, has also been debarred by FAME from re-contesting the election.

The statement said there was no level-playing field during the elections and FAME had received complaints from voters and candidates alleging serious violations in the elections.

“Pending a detailed inquiry, the result was withheld but votes polled to each candidate were allowed to be announced,” it said.

It was for the first time in the history of the state Youth Congress that the president and other office-bearers were elected through secret ballots.

Vikramaditya had polled 5,919 votes whereas his nearest rival Raghubir Bali, son of former minister G.S. Bali, polled 2,434 votes.

The sitting HYC president, Manmohan Katoch got only 457 votes.
