Violence in Himachal town after youth’s death

Baddi (Himachal Pradesh), June 13 (IANS) Tension prevailed in this Himachal Pradesh industrial town Monday when angered at the death of a youth due to alleged police harassment, a mob pelted stones and burnt police vehicles.

Two police vehicles were set afire and six police personnel were injured in a clash with the mob near a police station in Baddi, some 125 km from Shimla, Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) S.R. Mardi told IANS, adding the situation in the town was brought control by late evening.

A large number of protesters from Kalka in Haryana carrying the body of Sucha Singh gathered in front of the police station to lodge their protest over his death. They alleged that police were harassing him for quite sometime.

They alleged that Sucha, belonging to a village near Kalka, tried to commit suicide by hanging himself from a high-power transmission line Sunday after he was fined by police for not wearing a helmet while riding a two-wheeler. He was admitted in a critical condition to the PGI in Chandigarh, where he died later.

Claiming he took the extreme step after frequent harassment by police over the issue, the protesters, who were demanding action against the police personnel responsible for his death, later turned violent.

Mardi said a case against police personnel has been registered.
