Villagers, Maoists exchange fire in West Bengal
January 23rd, 2010 - 10:16 pm ICT by IANSKolkata, Jan 23 (IANS) Heavy firing between Maoist rebels and a section of villagers was reported in West Bengal’s West Midnapore district Saturday evening, police said.
“We have received information from media persons that a group of Maoists and villagers violently clashed this (Saturday) evening in Shalboni police station area. We heard that three Maoist rebels were also killed in the gun battle,” West Midnapore Superintendent of Police Manoj Verma told IANS.
He said a police team could not visit the spot so far as the forces were presently busy in an ongoing operation being carried out in five different places in and around the Shalboni forest region.
“We are trying to send our team to the area as early as possible,” Verma added.
