Vijender congratulated for Olympic win

New Delhi, Aug 22 (IANS) Congratulations for boxer Vijender Kumar for winning a bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics came from President Pratibha Patil, Vice-President Hamid Ansari and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Friday.In her message, President Patil said: “I am very happy and proud that you have won the bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics.”

The boxer, who is already assured of a bronze medal, lost 5-8 to Cuban Emilio Correa Bayeaux Jr. in the semi-finals of the middleweight (75 kg) category Friday.

Praising Kumar, Patil said he has given India another medal.

“Your achievement is praiseworthy not only because you have given India another medal at the Games, but also more so because you have pushed yourself to the limit in the true spirit of the Olympics, while being pitted against the best in the world.”

Vice-president Hamid Ansari while congratulating Kumar said the victory was the outcome of his “determination and sustained efforts.”

He expressed his hope that this first Olympic boxing medal would inspire many Indian boxers to emulate Vijender.

In his message, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said: “Your single-minded devotion to excellence in your chosen field of sport has resulted in this achievement which makes the entire nation proud. I am confident that greater laurels await you in the
future.”
