Uttarakhand concedes demand for CBI probe into student’s death
July 8th, 2009 - 9:13 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )Dehradun, July 8 (IANS) Uttarakhand Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Wednesday conceded the demand for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the alleged killing of a Ghaziabad management graduate by police here last week, official sources said.
Ranvir Singh, 24, was shot dead after he and his two friends had a scuffle in a crowded locality with policemen who said they had demanded documents of their motor-bike that bore a Haryana registration number.
The three boys had driven down to Dehradun on the bike from their home in Ghaziabad.
According to Uttarakhand police, Ranvir and his friends had a scuffle during which he allegedly snatched a police sub inspector’s service revolver before fleeing.
When they were spotted again and asked to surrender, they opened fire following which the cops retaliated, leaving him dead, police say. His two friends managed to speed away.
But the family denies that Ranvir had any criminal record.
The slain youth’s father Ravindra Singh Tuesday lodged a murder case against police. He had also demanded a CBI inquiry and approached Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) president Rajnath Singh, who is also the MP from Ghaziabad.
The Uttarakhand government had earlier asked the state Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to probe the case.
