Uttar Pradesh students charged with assault on professor
June 12th, 2008 - 11:59 am ICT by IANSAllahabad, June 11 (IANS) The Allahabad University (AU) has recommended filing of criminal cases against student leaders for assaulting a varsity professor, the police said Wednesday. A group of students Tuesday manhandled professor A.K. Srivastava after barging into his office in the chemistry department.
The students alleged that Srivastava had favoured his relatives in the university examinations and also opposed students’ union elections, the police added.
“I have identified the four students who abused me. The students’ names and photographs have already been sent to the police,” Srivastava told IANS.
He added that the incident was a well planned move to insult him publicly.
Meanwhile, the members of the Allahabad University Teachers’ Association (AUTA) condemned the attack on the chemistry professor and demanded expulsion of all the students involved in the incident.
AUTA members also demanded a judicial inquiry into the entire incident and arrest of the culprits at the earliest, said an AU official.
“The varsity administration will take stringent action against the students involved in the incident. AU officials have already been instructed in this regard,” Rajan Harshe, vice chancellor of the university, told IANS.
