Lucknow, June 16 (IANS) An Uttar Pradesh policeman was killed in a gunfight with a group of bandits Tuesday, an official said Tuesday.
The gunfight, which was on at Suruwal Rajapur village in Chitrakoot district, about 280 km from here, also left two policemen injured.

The bandits, led by wanted criminal Ghanshyam Kewat who is carrying a reward of Rs.50,000, “are heavily armed”, additional director general of police Brij Lal told IANS.

“They killed one of our constables, Shameem, while two others, Rajendra Prasad and Dileep Tiwari, were injured in cross firing,” Brij Lal said.

Police cordoned off the village to prevent the bandits from escaping.

“Though we are making every effort to arrest the criminals, nabbing them will be difficult at night. We have cordoned off the entire village so that the criminals don’t run away in the dark,” he said.

According to police, Kewat and his gang operate from Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, where they are wanted in several cases of murder, abduction and other crimes.
