Uttar Pradesh gets 3.5 million new voters
September 30th, 2011 - 5:35 pm ICT by IANSLucknow, Sep 30 (IANS) India’s most populous state, Uttar Pradesh has got 3.5 million new voters — going up from 108,432,526 last year to 111,916,689 this year, an official said Friday.
State Additional Chief Election Officer Mritunjay Kumar Narayan attributed this rise to the awareness drive undertaken by the Election Commission over the past one year.
“The election commission would continue with the exercise of adding fresh names in the voters list,” he said.
“…All those people who would turn 18 between now and Jan 1, 2012, would be entitled to getting themselves registered with the Election Commission, thereby further raising the number of voters in the state,” he added.
According to him, “The idea is to ensure that every single individual attaining the age of 18 formally acquires his right to vote well before the state elections in 2012.”
Meanwhile, with a view to promote the exercise, the commission has issued instructions to all district election officers to activate the grassroot level functionaries at the booth level to undertake a door-to-door voter enrolment during the first fortnight of October.
