New Delhi, June 12 (IANS) Lashing out at the electronic media hungry of television rating points (TRPs), Women and Child Development Minister Renuka Chowdhury Thursday said it was not fair to make a TV serial on slain teenager Aarushi Talwar when investigations were still on. “In the race for higher TRPs, a teleserial is planning to use the Aarushi murder plot, which is absolutely unfair,” Chowdhury said on the sidelines of a conference on child labour.

“The investigations in the case are still going on. Then, how can anyone make a serial on this tragedy?” she added.

Aarushi, 14, was found dead in her Noida home May 16. While police initially named missing domestic help Hemraj as the main suspect, they found his body on the terrace of the house the next day.

Her father Rajesh Talwar, a prominent dentist, has been arrested as a suspect in the murders. The Noida police initially cast aspersions on his character and even on Aarushi - a statement that has been condemned by many, including Chowdhury.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is now investigating the case.

Earlier this week, Aarushi’s mother Nupur Talwar moved the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) against Balaji Telefilms, which was planning to include an episode inspired by Aarushi’s life and death in their popular TV soap opera “Kahani Ghar Ghar Kii”.

Following that, NCPCR had written to the information and broadcasting (I&B) ministry expressing its concern.

In a two-page note to the I&B ministry, the commission wrote: “The NCPCR hereby directs that Balaji Telefilms shouldn’t be allowed to make a serial on the Aarushi murder case until the investigation is over as it will amount to influencing the investigation and the final outcome of the case.”

In response, Balaji Telefilms said it will not step back from airing the episode. Speaking on behalf of the company’s head Ekta Kapoor, creative head Nivedita Basu told IANS they will not change the track of the serial.

“Neither Balaji nor STAR Plus has received any notice to stop the track. And no, we are not changing it,” Basu said.
