US woman gets four years for killing Indian student

New York, July 8 (IANS) An American woman whose car accidentally ran over and killed an Indian doctoral student has been jailed for four years by an Ohio court and asked to pay over $15,000 as damages to his family. April R. Hankinson, 27, had jumped a red light, struck another car with her sports utility vehicle and swerved to the sidewalk pushing the pedestrian student into the Hocking River June 30 last year, the police said.

The body of Abhishek Singh, 22, who hailed from Faizabad district of Uttar Pradesh, was found the next day in the river. He had drowned.

In a plea deal with prosecutors, Hankinson pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicular homicide.

She admitted to driving under the influence of alcohol at the time and had her driver’s license suspended for eight years, The Post of Athens reported Monday.

The plea agreement had the approval of Singh’s family and the Ohio University, Athens County prosecutors said.

A nurse and a mother herself, Hankinson also expressed remorse.
