US special envoy visits Myanmar
September 10th, 2011 - 12:23 am ICT by IANSWashington, Sep 9 (IANS) US special envoy to Myanmar Derek Mitchell arrived in Yangon Friday on his first visit to the country for talks with the government, officials said.
Mitchell was appointed in August as the US coordinator for policy on Myanmar, Xinhua reported.
He is expected to hold discussions with government officials in new capital Nay Pyi Taw and meet representatives of political parties and ethnic minorities as well as noted political figure Aung San Suu Kyi in Yangon.
In May and June, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia and the Pacific Joseph Yun and Senator John McCain visited Myanmar.
