US Senate softens ‘Buy American’ provision in stimulus plan
February 5th, 2009 - 1:38 pm ICT by IANSWashington, Feb 5 (DPA) The US Senate voted late Wednesday to ease a “Buy American” provision in the economic stimulus legislation. The measure had sparked fears of retaliatory measures by US trading partners and a possible spiral of protectionism in an already reeling global economy.
The requirement to favour US-made supplies to be used in infrastructure projects, included in the nearly $900 billion package being considered by the Senate, was softened to allow for exceptions as required by US trade agreements, broadcaster MSNBC reported.
