Washington, Aug 19 (IANS) The US has offered $90 million in emergency flood aid to North Korea, the State Department said.

The aid comes in response to humanitarian needs arising from recent flooding in North Korea. The aid will go to Kangwon and North and South Hwanghae provinces through US NGOs, Xinhua reported citing a statement.

“This emergency relief demonstrates our continuing concern for the well-being of the North Korean people,” said the department.

“It has been the US’ long-standing position that the provision of humanitarian assistance is separate from political and security concerns,” the statement added.

Following severe flooding in North Korea in September 2010, the US had provided $600,000 in emergency relief supplies to the country.
