US happy with progress on n-deal with India: Roemer
March 22nd, 2010 - 3:06 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )New Delhi, March 22 (IANS) Declining to comment on reports of a possible US-Pakistan nuclear deal, US Ambassador to India Timothy J. Roemer Monday said his country was happy with the progress on the civil nuclear deal with India.
“We are happy over the progress on the civil nuclear deal with India in the last few weeks,” Roemer told reporters when asked about news reports that the US is not averse to inking a similar nuclear deal with Pakistan.
He was speaking on the sidelines of an event organised by USAID on clean water and sanitation at a slum cluster in the national capital on the occasion of World Water Day.
Roemer said he was the US representative in India and was working to make the civil nuclear deal a success. “This deal, the 123 deal (with India), will give clean energy and we are working for it.”
So far, the US has not conceded to Pakistan’s demand for a nuclear deal similar to the one with India. But, in an indication of a possible policy shift, US ambassador to Islamabad Anne Patterson said in a recent interview to a journal that the two sides were going to have “working level talks” on the subject during a strategic dialogue on March 24.
