Washington, Jan 23 (IANS) US Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, who was severely injured in a shooting about a year ago, announced Sunday that she is resigning from Congress to focus full-time on her recovery.

“I have more work to do on my recovery, so to do what is best for Arizona, I will step down this week,” Giffords, who represents the 8th Congressional district of Arizona, announced in a video message posted on her website.

She also said she is getting better, reported Xinhua.

On Jan 8, 2011, Giffords was shot in the head during a shooting rampage in Tucson, Arizona where six people died and thirteen were injured. Giffords was the intended target.

The shooting shook the nation, but Giffords made a miraculous recovery and regained the ability to speak and walk.

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer said she would call a special election to fill Giffords’s seat.
