Washington, July 13 (IANS) The White House Tuesday condemned the assassination of Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s half brother Ahmad Wali Karzai, saying the US will work with the Afghan government to find out who’s responsible, Xinhua reported.
“The United States condemns in the strongest possible terms of the murder of President Karzai’s half brother in Kandahar,” White House Spokesman Jay Carney said during a regular briefing.
Wali Karzai, the head of Kandahar’s provincial council, was shot dead by one of his bodyguards earlier Tuesday. However, the assailant was killed by another bodyguard, according to reports.
Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.
Carney said the US side will “work with the Afghan authorities” to find out who’s responsible for the assassination.
The US is beginning withdrawal of its forces this month from Afghanistan, and is on track to pull out 10,000 troops this year.
Another 23,000 will leave by next summer.
