US arranging transfer of Tri-Valley students: Krishna
March 9th, 2011 - 7:16 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, March 9 (IANS) The US has started the process of transferring Indian students from the troubled Tri-Valley University to other American universities, the Lok Sabha was informed Wednesday.
“The United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement has begun the process of adjusting the status and transfer of eligible students on a case-by-case basis,” External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna said during question hour.
The students of Tri-Valley University in California, 90 percent of them from India, face the prospect of deportation after the varsity was found to be a sham and was shut down.
Around 700 students are being considered for reinstatement of their status, Krishna said, urging Indian students to exercise caution and verify antecedents of foreign universities before applying for higher studies abroad.
“It is for the students themselves to make verification with their friends and on the web,” Krishna said.
Noting that the government was also monitoring various educational institutions in the US, the minister said the government’s primary concern was welfare of the affected Indian students and to ensure that their academic career was not disrupted due to the closure of the Tri-Valley University for alleged fraudulent practices.
The government, he said, expected the US administration to take steps to prevent such universities from exploiting foreign students.
Krishna said he had raised the issue of Tri-Valley University students during his meeting with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
