US army makes self-steering bullet with fins

London, Jan 31 (IANS) The US army has come up with a new “self-steering” bullet that comes with tiny fins which guide it to its target, a media report said.

The technology will help regular army soldiers shoot with the accuracy of snipers, the Daily Mail reported.

The 10-cm bullet works through an optical sensor in its nose which detects a laser beam on a target.

The sensor sends information to guidance electronics that calculates the direction. The bullet then steers itself, via tiny fins, to the target.

The bullet has been designed by US laboratory Sandia.

“We’re making it simple for everyone to use,” said developer Red Jones.

Unlike most bullets which have grooves to enable them to spin and fly straight, the new design is smooth-bore.

To enable the bullet to turn in flight towards a target, the spin had to go, Jones said.
