UN’s eco-heritage awareness programme now in India
October 5th, 2011 - 10:35 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Oct 5 (IANS) An eco-learning programme for 420 school students will be held at the world heritage site of the Keoladeo National Park near Bharatpur in Rajasthan Oct 7-10, Unesco announced Wednesday.
The programme is a collaboration between Unesco and Panasonic India.
Earlier known as the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, the fresh water marsh spread over 29 sq km is a paradise for water birds. Keoladeo draws 350 kinds of birds, some of whom roost in the park while others migrate from central Asia and Siberia.
The programme for participants from three schools - John Milton Public School, DPS Mathura Refinery and St. Vivekananda Public School - involves projects, presentation, discussion, eco-learning session, collection of eco-picture diaries and selection of a India contest winner from among the children.
Unesco’s World Heritage Centre and Panasonic announced the Youth Education Strategic Partnership agreement to promote environmental education for the GenNext. The two year programme aims to raise awareness about the 40th anniversary of Unesco’s World Heritage Convention.
The program was introduced in India after being successfully initiated in Brazil, Indonesia, Japan, UAE and Britain.
