Undertrial escapes after assailants fire at cops on train

Chandigarh, Jan 25 (IANS) An undertrial escaped from custody when three men fired at the policemen accompanying him in a train as he was being taken from Haryana’s Karnal town to Punjab’s Gidderbaha town. The three policemen were seriously injured, police said Monday.
The incident occurred Sunday night when the Udayan Abha express train halted at Duala village near Gidderbaha, around 200 km from Chandigarh. The Haryana police were bringing Gurpreet Singh, from Karnal to for a hearing at a court in Gidderbaha in Punjab’s Muktsar district Monday.

“This incident happened at Duala village where the train had halted for a few minutes on Sunday night. Singh is from a Punjab village and he is wanted in many criminal cases registered against him in Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan,” a police official said.

The injured policemen were identified as Assistant Sub-Inspector Krishan Kumar, constable Kartar Singh and constable Subhash Kumar.
