Undertrial commits suicide in Uttar Pradesh prison
September 20th, 2011 - 4:38 pm ICT by IANSLucknow, Sep 20 (IANS) An undertrial accused of rape allegedly committed suicide in a district jail in Uttar Pradesh, police said Tuesday.
Rajiv Kumar, 22, was found hanging from a tree on the premises of the jail in Jalaun district Monday. His family alleged that Kumar died of police atrocities, and claimed that the prison officials earlier tried to project his death as an accident.
“Prima facie it appears to be a case of suicide,” police inspector Subedar Singh told reporters in Jalaun, 250 km from here.
“But, taking strict cognizance of the death inside the prison, the district administration has recommended a judicial inquiry into the matter,” he added.
Police said Kumar, a native of Jalaun’s Madhavgarh town, was sent to judicial custody Aug 21.
