Under-trial escapes from police custody
April 22nd, 2011 - 11:38 pm ICT by IANSPanaji, April 22 (IANS) An under-trial, who was allegedly contracted to kill state Home Minister Ravi Naik and his sons Roy and Ritesh, escaped from police custody Friday, police said.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Deu Benualikar told IANS that Michael Fernandes, 23, who was arrested April 11, escaped from police custody while he was being taken for a medical examination.
“The handcuffs were taken out when he was being medically examined. Police are looking out for them. Check points have been erected along all major roadways,” Benaulikar said.
Booked nearly two dozen times for crimes ranging from theft, robbery and assault, Fernandes was arrested last week after he fled from police custody last year.
The man created news last year when he reportedly confessed to the police while in custody that he had been offered money to kill Naik and his sons by one Joeboy, a known local extortionist.
