Dhaka, Nov 16 (IANS) UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has said that if Bangladesh’s political leaders want, the UN was ready to provide technical and logistic support to help conduct the 2014 general elections in a credible and transparent manner.
“This is your system. This is your choice,” the UN chief was quoted as saying by the Daily Star.
Ban recalled that the UN had sent experts and gave logistic support to make the 2008 parliamentary polls fair.
The UN chief said he made his offer at a meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Leader of the Opposition Khaleda Zia.
“Since 2008, Bangladesh has made progress towards democracy, but more needs to be done,” he said.
Ban wrapped up his three-day visit to Bangladesh Wednesday.
