UN chief discusses Libya with regional organisations
August 27th, 2011 - 5:26 pm ICT by IANSNew York, Aug 27 (IANS/RIA Novosti) UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has discussed with heads of leading regional organisations ways to rebuild Libya after more than six months of hostilities, the UN said.
Ban held a video conference Friday with officials of the European Union, the African Union, the Arab League and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.
“At this moment of great transition, we must come together with an effective, well-coordinated programme of international action,” Ban said.
“All of us now must work together and respond rapidly to requests from the Libyan transitional authorities for assistance.”
“In addition to immediate humanitarian assistance, particularly as it relates to medical help, they (the organisations) placed special emphasis on early support for elections, transitional justice and policing, as well as longer-term assistance in socio-economic recovery, rule of law and institution-building,” he said.
The secretary general’s Special Adviser for Post-Conflict Planning Ian Martin and Special Envoy for Libya Abdel-Elah Al-Khatib, had met leaders of the rebel National Transitional Council (NTC) in Doha, Qatar, earlier this week.
An uprising against Muammar Gaddafi’s 42-year rule began in Libya in February. An international military operation to protect civilians began March 19 following a UN resolution.
Rebel forces have got control over large swathes of the country and most of the capital, Tripoli.
