UAE teaches farmers about E.coli
June 28th, 2011 - 12:59 am ICT by IANSAbu Dhabi, June 27 (IANS/WAM) The Abu Dhabi administration held a workshop Monday to educate farmers about the dangers of E.coli bacteria and ways to prevent contamination of fresh vegetables.
At least 44 people have died and more than 3,700 others have been affected across Europe in an E.coli outbreak that began in Germany in May.
“After the recent outbreak of E.coli bacteria in Germany, we want to make sure that nothing similar happens in Abu Dhabi,” said Christopher Hirst, chief executive officer of the Abu Dhabi Farmers’ Services Centre.
The E.coli bacteria is commonly found in human and animal faeces. For farm produce to be contaminated, it has to come into contact with that bacteria either by touching the faeces directly, by being handled by farm staff who have not properly washed their hands or by coming into contact with water that has been contaminated with the bacteria, experts said at the workshop.
