Stockholm, May 30 (IANS) The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has hailed Iraq for its efforts to restore peace and stability in the war-ravaged country, WAM news agency reported Friday. “The newly formed police force and Iraqi military have been playing an important role to stem the insurgency in the country,” Tariq Ahmed Al Haidan, assistant under-secretary of UAE’s foreign ministry for political affairs, said.

Haidan was addressing the first follow-up conference of the Iraq Compact Annual Review Conference (ICARC) here Thursday.

The conference organised by Sweden under the auspices of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki was aimed at strengthening the role of the international community in restoring peace and order in Iraq.

Some 100 delegates took part in the one-day conference.

Al Haidan expressed hope that the conference will play an important role in encouraging the international community for rebuilding Iraq.

He noted that the UAE has given a total of $100 million in aid to Iraq, including a $10 million grant from President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan to help the commissariat for Iraqi refugees’ affairs.
