The incident occurred Sunday evening.
The police said that Rohit Sharma found a young married woman named Ritu Devi alone in the jungle in Kothi Pain village in Bhaderwah, 200 km north-east of Jammu, where she had gone to collect fuelwood. There, Sharma tried to rape her. The woman raised an alarm, and attracted her mother-in-law’s attention, who was nearby.
The two women were virtually in a hand to hand fight with Sharma, when the youth picked up an axe and hit both women and killed them on the spot, police alleged.
Sharma is absconding, Senior Superintendent of Police Prabhat Singh told reporters.
