Two skyscrapers collapse in Brazil
January 26th, 2012 - 2:36 pm ICT by IANSLondon, Jan 26 (IANS) Two high-rise buildings — one of 20 storeys — have collapsed in Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro city, trapping at least 11 people inside, BBC reported.
Streets and cars were all covered with debris Wednesday but the cause of the collapse has remained unclear. The height of the second building was also not clear.
Witnesses said there was an explosion and a strong smell of gas.
City mayor Eduardo Paes said the authorities were focusing on rescue efforts before looking into the incident’s cause.
The buildings also crushed a four-storey construction site on their way down.
