Two Maoists killed in Chhattisgarh gun battle
June 21st, 2011 - 12:29 am ICT by IANSRaipur, June 20 (IANS) At least two Maoist militants were gunned down by police in a gun battle that broke out Monday in a forested pocket of Chhattisgarh’s violence-hit Bastar region, police said.
The gun fight was reported from Sitapur area of Bijapur district, located some 500 km south of Raipur.
“The gun battle began when a search squad of the state police was attacked by armed rebels. The jawans returned fire and two rebels were killed on the spot. We have recovered their bodies,” an officials at police headquarters told IANS.
Some explosives and an AK-47 were recovered from the attack site, the official said.
Meanwhile, a report said that three tribal civilians were kidnapped by Maoists from a relief camp at Bijapur, but police were yet to confirm it.
“The report about civilian’s kidnapping has not been confirmed. I am trying to ascertain the news with local police,” the official at the police headquarters said.
