Two killed as monorail slab collapses (Lead)

Mumbai, July 1 (IANS) Two employees of Larsen & Toubro were killed when a slab of the under-construction monorail collapsed here Friday evening, an official said.

The accident took place when work was on for the alignment of the beams near the BPCL Depot when one of the supports failed and the slab crashed down.

The two victims have been identified as Baldev Singh (45) and Dinesh Kumar (22), who were killed on the spot, around 6.30 p.m.

Two others - Joga Singh (30), who suffered a leg injury and Sunil Kumar (23), who suffered a hand injury - have been admitted to Rajawadi Hospital, Ghatkopar in northeast Mumbai, for treatment.

The accident took place near Mysore Colony, RCF Road.

L&T; is one of the implementing authorities for the project on behalf of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

“Although the family members of the deceased cannot be consoled enough, appropriate compensation will be given to the members of their family. The other injured will also be compensated appropriately,” an MMRDA official said.

The state’s first 20-km long, prestigious monorail is being constructed as a pilot project at a cost of over Rs.2,700 crore and the first phase is expected to be operational by the year-end.

MMRDA assured that the project implementing and executing agencies have taken all the precautionary measures and stringent security codes are being followed and termed Friday’s accident as unfortunate.
