Two killed, 14 vehicles burnt in Punjab road accident
March 25th, 2010 - 12:41 am ICT by IANSFaridkot, March 24 (IANS) In a major accident involving an oil-tanker, at least two people died, several suffered serious injuries and 14 vehicles were burnt in this Punjab district Wednesday evening, police said.
According to police, an oil-tanker suddenly overturned and immediately caught fire on Faridkot road in Dhilwa Kurdh village near Sadak town.
Though, the driver and cleaner of the tanker jumped out of the vehicle in time and even tried to alert other approaching vehicles but they were unable avert the tragedy.
“The accident happened on a very busy road. Four four wheelers, including a truck, and nine two wheelers were burnt. Two people were burnt alive while around 10-12 victims, with serious burn injuries, were shifted to nearby hospitals,” a police official, who was present on the accident spot, told IANS.
“Now the situation is under control. The oil-tanker was filled with petrol. We are investigating various aspects of this accident and recording the statements of the eyewitnesses.”
However unconfirmed police sources claimed that four people were killed in the accident.
Border town of Faridkot is some 250 km from the state capital Chandigarh.
