Two injured as chain snatcher opens fire in Delhi

New Delhi, June 27 (IANS) Two passers-by were shot by a snatcher who opened fire when he fell from his bike in a desperate attempt to flee after snatching a woman’s chain. The victim received head injuries while the accused managed to escape, police said Wednesday.

The incident took place in east Delhi’s Shahdara area around evening. The injured were taken to a nearby hospital.

According to the police, the victim Mamta Gupta, 43, was on a cycle rickshaw with her daughter-in-law, Preeti Gupta, 24 when the two motorcycle borne accused approached them from behind and snatched Mamta’s gold chain.

While the victim lost her balance and fell on the ground head first, her daughter-in-law tried to catch hold of the accused, who fell down as well.

Realising that a crowd was gathering around them, one of the accused fired 12 shots indiscriminately hitting two passers-by - a cyclist Ali Hassan, 48 and a rickshaw-puller Mohit, 23.

The other 10 shots hit a car that was passing by, but the driver escaped unhurt.

Meanwhile, a security-guard nearby fired three shots at the snatchers who amanged to flee from the spot.
