Two held for extortion bid in capital
January 10th, 2011 - 12:30 am ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Jan 9 (IANS) Two people were arrested for attempting to extort Rs.30 lakh from a businessman in east Delhi, police said Sunday.Suraj Kumar Singh, 20, and Gaurav Verma, 19, were arrested Saturday from Geeta Colony area where they had come to collect the ransom demanded from the businessman, a garment shop-owner. The two had threatened to kill the businessman. They had bought a toy gun for the purpose.
“Suraj worked at the victim’s shop for five years before quitting in 2007. After that, he started a chit fund business but incurred a loss of around Rs.15 lakh when his two partners fled with the money,” a police officer said.
To repay his debt to some 60 lenders, Suraj planned to extort money from his former employer and roped in Gaurav by promising to pay him Rs.2 lakh.
