Two held for duping girls via matrimonial ads
January 29th, 2011 - 2:37 am ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Jan 29 (IANS) Two men were arrested in Delhi for duping money from girls on the pretext of marriage after contacting them through matrimonial advertisements, police said.Ashish Shankar, 31, was arrested for taking Rs. 3.49 lakh from a girl for making arrangements for their marriage after both came in contact through a matrimonial advertisement published in a newspaper by girl’s family living in East Delhi’s Pandav Nagar area, said Ashok Chand, the Deputy Commissioner of Police.
Chand said, after taking the money he kept on delaying the dates of marriage. On the basis of a complaint lodged by the girl’s family, Shankar was arrested from his home in Vasundara Enclave Thursday.
During interrogation, Shankar, said he did M.Tech from Maharashtra’s Nanded University and worked as computer engineer with Dell and HP in Bangalore before being shifted to Delhi along with his family.
The man is already married and currently jobless, the police officer said, adding that the money has been recovered from him and further investigation is on.
In another incident, Nitin Sachdeva, 36 was arrested from his home in Shahadra in East Delhi on the basis of a complaint lodged by a girl who accused Sachdeva of taking Rs. 5,000 from her after committing that he will marry her, Chand said
Sachdeva, who graduated from Delhi University and did Masters in computer application from IGNOU (Indira Gandhi National Open University), created a fake profile on the matrimonial website jeevansathi.com, presenting himself as a divorcee. He contacted 14 users since April 2008 and police are investigating whether he has duped other women too, the DCP said.
