Mumbai, Aug 8 (IANS) Two notorious criminals associated with the Vicki Malhotra gang, one of whom was also wanted in Nepal, were gunned down here Friday, the police announced. The two were identified as Mahesh Makwan (38) alias Simon, who was wanted for several cases in India and Nepal, and Ramu Rambachchan Gupta (28), who was convicted and sentenced to life for murder.

Joint Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria said that Makwan had been charged under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA). He jumped parole in 2005.

Gupta, who had been convicted for life in a murder case of 1996, escaped from the Yerawada Jail in Pune eight years ago.

Maria said the duo was involved in the murder of Dawood Ibrahim’s henchman Salim Kurla, who was shot dead while undergoing treatment at the Belle-Vue Nursing Home in Jogeshwari, a northwestern suburb.

Salim had been arrested in connection with the 1993 serial bomb explosions that killed some 270 people in Mumbai.
