Two foreigners held with heroin worth Rs.3 crore
April 6th, 2011 - 10:03 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, April 6 (IANS) An Afghan and a Nigerian were arrested in the national capital with 1.66 kg of heroin worth Rs.3 crore in international market, police said Wednesday.
“Mohammed Sarwar, 32, from Kandhar in Afghanistan, and Emeka Paul, 27, a Nigerian, were found in possession of 1.66 kg of fine quality heroin worth Rs.3 crore near Netaji Subhash Institute of Technology in Dwarka in south Delhi Tuesday,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police Arun Kampani.
“They were held following a tip-off that foreign nationals are involved in supply of drugs to different countries with Delhi as a transit point,” said Kampani.
Sarwar and Paul were apprehended with 860 gm and 800 gm of heroin respectively, he said.
During interrogation, Sarwar told police that he was carrying the heroin by wrapping it on his right leg below the knee to make it look like a plaster bandage.
“We came to know that these drug dealers enter India on the pretext of medical treatment but are actually into drug business,” said Kampani.
Sarwar, a school dropout, came to India allegedly for his wife’s treatment three months ago, but is is a member of an international drug mafia led by Hazi Zia of Kandhar, Kampani said.
“Sarwar and others carry the drugs in their stomach by way of capsules which are extricated later,” said Kampani.
Paul came to India on a business visa in 2006 and after that has been visiting the country every six months.
“He is into the drug racket for a long time but has been caught for the first time. He obtains drugs from Afghan nationals and other drug dealers in Punjab. He then supplies these to criminals of Nigerian origin based in Delhi,” said Kampani.
